10 Most Underrated Grunge Albums
7. My Own Prison - Creed
There's probably a certain demographic of rock fan who would prefer if Creed never saw the light of day. Once these Christian rockers started to pick up steam after Human Clay, there was no denying the clear plagiarism that was happening whenever Eddie Vedder's voice came blaring through Scott Stapp's mouth. However, the initial start of their career actually showed some genuine potential.
Across My Own Prison, you can hear just the slightest traces of something heavier happening in Creed's sound. On stuff like the title track and Torn, you can hear some edgier vocal styles creeping in, almost like Stapp is trying to find a perfect balance between Pearl Jam's earnestness and Metallica's grit. Though his attempts at heavy only reach Load-era Metallica, it could have just as easily gone into St. Anger territory.
That's before you even get to the instrumentation, which was probably the best that this band had ever gotten. Long before he had to tastefully throw his licks into pop flavored songs, Mark Tremonti has the makings of a guitar legend on this outing, proving that even the most amazing guitar accentuations can make up for the crutch that they have for a singer. As opposed to just another corporate attempt at alternative, this is the best Creed and the beginnings of the best Alter Bridge brought together into one package.
