10 Most Underrated Grunge Albums
5. UltraMega Ok - Soundgarden
By the time the grunge labels started to fade, Soundgarden had started to turn themselves into one of the most eccentric bands on top of the charts. Despite having genuine hits like Blow Up the Outside World and Black Hole Sun, there was always the artsiness creeping in just beneath the surface. Though albums like Superunknown and Badmotorfinger show a much more refined Soundgarden, Ultramega Ok shows them at their punkiest.
Across this album, it's clear that there is an indie slant to pretty much everything, down to the in-the-moment album artwork. From one track to the next, you get the sense that Soundgarden are still finding their strengths, which often makes for amazing tracks like Flower and the Zeppelin-like stomp of Beyond the Wheel. On the other hand, some of the more out-there moments also add a lot of character to the record, including the weird amateur punk on Circle of Power and the John Lennon "cover" song One Minute Silence.
Considering that this is one of the rougher first outings released long before grunge became a hit, it's a wonder how this was able to pick up a Grammy just a year after its release. Though we wouldn't see the actual polish until just a few years later, this is a great look at some of grunge's most creative minds getting a feel for who they are.
