10 Most Underrated Grunge Albums

3. Dry As a Bone - Green River

At the start of grunge, it wasn't out of the question for a lot of bands to mix and match their respective members. Hell, it took a long time for what we now know as Pearl Jam to finally achieve final form, with Eddie Vedder not coming onboard until grunge was already firmly underway. In an alternate universe though, we could have gotten one of the most interesting punk acts in Green River.

Named after the local serial killer of the same name, the pedigree on display here is a virtual who's who of great players, with both Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam among the ranks. However, the real attitude comes from Mark Arm, who started in this outfit before eventually going into a punkier direction with Mudhoney. Though the creative tensions were there from the start, the EP Dry as a Bone is a good proof of concept that this kind of music could work, with songs like This Town actually having some brighter moments.

These guys really fell apart before they even had the chance to make it though, with Arm preferring the more punk rock route over the bigger ambitions of Ament and Gossard. At the same time, this is probably the one grunge record that shows the foundations of what grunge would inevitably turn into in the next few years.
