10 Most Underrated Guitarists In Hard Rock

8. Dave Navarro - Jane's Addiction

Though hair metal may have been the focus throughout California, the end of the '80s also saw some more off-the-wall acts coming from the land of Hollywood and big dreams. Not long after the Red Hot Chili Peppers arrived on the scene, Jane's Addiction started making waves and becoming California's first real alternative success story. Every song on their records may have been amazing, but it went to another plain once Dave Navarro strapped on his guitar.

For as rudimentary as alternative rock may seem on the surface, Navarro had a completely different agenda when it came time to solo. In lieu of having a subdued feel on tracks, Navarro is born and bred in the school of shred, with influences that comprise of everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Kirk Hammett. While the band made waves off of the acoustic ballad "Jane Says," songs like "Mountain Song" and "Stop!" show Navarro mixing in his love for old school heavy metal in between the funkier rhythms.

The chops on Navarro ended up being so jaw-dropping that he was even asked to join the Red Hot Chili Peppers after their separation from John Frusciante in the late '90s. Jane's Addiction may not be the most celebrated face in alternative rock, but Navarro has really come into his own as alternative rock's elder statesman.
