10 Most Underrated Hip-Hop Albums Of All Time
6. Q-Tip - The Renaissance
While the works of A Tribe Called Quest are among the most beloved and popular in hip-hop, the solo records of Q-Tip rarely seem to gain similar attention, despite often being somewhat of a continuation of Tribe’s mix of jazzy instrumentals, laid back flows, and dizzying verbal dexterity.
His second solo effort, 2008’s The Renaissance, is especially delightful. Tip’s production is as ever exceptional, with a focus on melody and songcraft that few rappers ever bother with. He doesn’t skimp on the actual rap, though, with the likes of “Gettin’ Up” showing off Tip’s ability to play with rhythm alongside an irresistible hook.
“ManWomanBoogie” is another highlight, making fantastic use of a sample from krautrock legends Can. The unpredictable bassline brings out Tip’s jazz fandom and he leaps all over the beat. He’s joined by Raphael Saddique for the uplifting "Move / Renaissance Rap".
If Tip will always be best remembered for his seminal group, and perhaps his production second, his solo work, particularly this album, makes up the third part of a truly great rap career.
