10 Most Underrated Indie Rock Albums Of All Time
6. The Hives - Tyrannosaurus Hives
The Hives’ commercial appeal peaked with the slew of hits syphoned from their first two albums, but their third is by far the best collection of songs. It strays just far enough from the straightforward garage template to remain fresh, but the diverse songwriting is airtight and incessantly fun.
The lead single “Walk Idiot Walk” sticks close to the chantable silliness of the Hives of old, but when they stretch their wings, it’s better still. "A Little More for Little You" adds an insistent synth riff to the mix and experiments with shifting dynamics, a skittering verse which dips into a triumphant chorus that the whole band joins in on.
Stranger still is the swing time “Diabolic Scheme”, a particularly goofy track even by The Hives’ standards. An exercise in pure melodrama with a bravura performance from the always entertaining Howlin' Pelle Almqvist, it’s a truly ridiculous track and all the better for it.
There are brash punk tracks like "Abra Cadaver" and more straightforward rockers like "Two-Timing Touch and Broken Bones"; it’s a fantastic distillation of everything in The Hives’ bag of tricks all stuffed into under 30 minutes.
