10 Most Underrated Megadeth Songs
1. I Thought I Knew It All
Has there even been a superior opening riff to this one?
'I Thought I Knew It All' finds Dave Mustaine in a more reflective, introspective state than his typical aggressive self. The track focuses on the concept of everything happening for a reason. In turn, Mustaine provides a somewhat hopeful take on life not being as randomly cruel as some might think.
It helps too that this track is a kick-ass headbanger that finds the crew at their heart-pounding best. 'Youthanasia', beyond having one of the more disturbing album covers in thrash metal history, finds Mustaine and co. on top form from start to finish.
Marty Friedman's guitar solo here is a work of art, allowing the track to reach a dramatic crescendo. The explosive change in tempo is subsequently cooled off with an angry but slowed outro, allowing the core message of the song to linger in the mind.
Often considered the last great LP from Megadeth before their infamous late-'90s creative slump, 'Youthanasia' has so many great tunes that it's hardly surprising some haven't grabbed the attention they deserve. Given its near-perfect composition, tempo and intensity, 'I Thought I Knew It All' is the most deserving of more acclaim. A perfectly on-point example of the creative highs Megadeth have so often reached.
