10 Most Underrated Metal Albums Of The 2000s

6. Gorguts - From Wisdom To Hate (2001)

In 1998, Canadian death metallers Gorguts rewrote their own formula, injecting the classic - yet outdated - death metal sound with some progressive technicalities, influenced by famed tech death legends, Death. The result was 'Obscura', an unexpectedly polarizing album that many called "ahead of its time" owing to its technical attributes, yet leaving die-hard death metal fans with a bitter taste in their mouths.

At a crossroads creatively, but with a rejuvenation in desire to continue as a band, Gorguts went to work on a sequel for the new millennium, resulting in this 2001 screamer.

Progressive and technical to continue this new lease of life, whilst harking back to a traditional death metal sound, 'From Wisdom to Hate' is the bridging album for fans of the two ends of Gorguts' spectrum. Daniel Mongrain more than adequately takes over the guitar reigns from Steeve Hurdle, Luc Lemay refines himself as a vocalist, with songs like 'Inverted' and 'Unearthing the Past' perfectly exemplifying the evolved frenetic-yet-still-humble sound.

Tragedy would quell Gorguts' immediate future, and it would be 12 years before we got a follow-up in 'Colored Sands'. In June 2020, Lemay announced that he had begun work on album #6.
