10 Most Underrated Metal Albums Of The 80s

4. Heavy Load - Stronger Than Evil

Does the title really make sense?

Nope.

Does it really matter?

Also nope.

The Swedish outfit's third and final LP finds them at their most measured, delivering the power-focused goods with more precision than usual. Opening track 'Run with the Devil' is arguably the band's musical peak, providing atmospheric, horror-friendly thrills at a fast pace with a wild guitar solo midway through.

The track encapsulates everything Heavy Load's Scandinavian cult fanbase loved about them. From the dark, fantastical lyrics to the power metal solos and tenacious vocals, it's a perfect starting point for new listeners. The surprisingly pop-friendly 'Free' reveals a different side of the group as they go through a more hopeful, upbeat phase with Thin Lizzy legend Phil Lynott leading the way on bass. The LP, overall, highlights the group's versatility more than any of their prior efforts.

Historically, the band deserve plentiful recognition as being one of the founding fathers of the Swedish heavy metal scene. By the time 'Stronger Than Evil' hit the stands in 1983, a whole wave of imitators, some of whom greatly surpassed this lot in all areas, had arrived. No longer a specialty act, Heavy Load went out with a rock-focused bang here, leaving a musical trail that remains strong to this day in their wake.
