10 Most Underrated Metallica Songs
9. Devil's Dance
Whenever Metallica fans line up to bash their 90's output, it normally comes down to its lack of heaviness. I will meet some of the detractors halfway and say that the all around stomp of these tracks pale in comparison to the sweeping epics of the band's early material. However, the band still knew how to make a juggernaut of a track when they wanted to.
Performed in a dropped tuning, "Devil's Dance" possesses all the darkness of a classic Metallica track while also showing their swaggering hard rock side. The sinister nature of the lyrics is juxtaposed perfectly by the bluesy guitar bends in the riff itself. One could argue it's not the most original idea to have a metal band talk about Satan, but it's a subject Metallica never tackled too often in their lyrics. Instead of sounding overdone or tired, this more demonic theme is a welcome change of pace than the band's normal discussions of war and introspective pain.
It may not have had much of a shelf life after the band's initial tours, but they did think enough of the track to give it the full orchestral treatment on S&M. While it may not be the thrash you're looking for, Metallica makes up for their punishing speed with a slow tempo and a mountain of attitude.
