7. Movies - Alien Ant Farm
Of all the biggest hits to come out of the nu metal era, Alien Ant Farm’s cover of Smooth Criminal has always been a point of contention. For fans, this was either the one time where nu metal decided to have some fun for once, or this was the sell out version of the genre that had no business being next to people like Korn or Coal Chamber. Alien Ant Farm weren’t concerned with sounding nasty all the time though, and Movies is just a good time from start to finish.
While most of the song isn’t nearly as catchy as the MJ song that they were cribbing from, those overdriven guitars and Dryden Mitchell’s whiny cadence feels right at home on this track. If anything, this song feels like one of the lesser pop punk breakup songs that somehow disguised itself as a nu metal track.
