10 Most Underrated Rock Albums Of The 90s

6. Yield - Pearl Jam

By the late '90s, Pearl Jam had started to shake off the shackles of being the gods of the music industry. Knowing that they didn't have to necessarily be perfect on albums like Vitalogy and No Code, the latest version of Pearl Jam felt more like an authentic band that were content with making whatever the hell they wanted to. And after experimenting for a few years, Yield is what happens when a band rediscovers their ability to kick ass again.

Instead of the usual weird tangents that we were used to on the past few albums, this is about the most consistent album of Pearl Jam's mid period, having a ton of great riffs stitched together with Eddie Vedder's voice, which can go from punk rock bombast to balladry on a dime. Just listening to the one two punch of opener Brain of J bleeding into the song Faithfull tells you that these are musicians who know how to work both sides of the rock spectrum.

This is also the point where the band started to open up a little bit more to the press, making their first music video since Jeremy on the song Do the Evolution and creating their own folk rock ballad from the ground up on Low Light. While the shine of the early '90s was long gone, that didn't mean that Pearl Jam had run out of surprises for us just yet.
