10 Most Underrated Rock Guitarists Of All Time
1. Steve Lukather - Toto
The kind of music that Toto puts out has been known to fuel many a dad rock radio station in its time. For as much as something like Africa might be a meme now, a lot of the melodies do end up holding up over time as some of the delectable pop rock of the '80s. It's almost a shame when you realize the musical Swiss Army Knife that you're actually working with behind the fretboard though.
Ever since he first arrived on the scene, the amount of classics that Steve Lukather has under his belt is astounding. Aside from his amazing work with Toto, Lukather's track record as a top session musician has given him some of the greatest guitar moments in the world. While someone might remember Eddie Van Halen's solo in Beat It by Michael Jackson, Lukather's the one behind the rest of the guitar work, from the first riff to the vicious stabs in between MJ's amazing vocal chops.
His chops don't begin and end at being a rhythm player though, with songs like Running with the Night by Lionel Richie showing his tasteful lead work, along with the crazy dips into the fusion world he does during the ending solo of Rosanna. Given that he's now known as one of the latest members of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band, Steve Lukather's career has very much been about being the guitar player's guitarist.
