10 Most Underrated Rock Guitarists Of All Time
6. Pete Townshend - The Who
Sometimes being underrated doesn't always come down to the actual way you are looked at in the public eye. More often than not, some musicians can be heralded as geniuses for their time, only to have their more mind-blowing eccentricities be lost to history. Yes, even legends can be undersold from time to time.
Compared to some more underground people, Pete Townshend of the Who has nothing to prove, being the songwriting genius behind albums like Tommy and Who's Next. When you're playing off of Keith Moon and John Entwistle though, Townshend's actual prowess with the guitar starts to seep into the background just a little bit. For as much as he can play the big chords that start something like Baba O'Riley, Townshend's delicate way of putting lead lines in between the cracks shows how devoted he is to seeing the big picture of the song rather than a random sketch.
I mean, being the lone guitar player in a band is already a difficult feat unto itself, and yet Townshend's way of using Chuck Berry-style licks to fill out the sound of John Entwistle is a clear sign that he understands his role in the group. Whereas other songwriters may get up in arms about how the song should go, Townshend is proof that the best stuff can come when you're playing off your fellow musicians.
