10 Most Underrated Rock Music Albums Of The 2000s
6. Sam's Town - The Killers
Okay... so picture yourself as the Killers in the mid 2000s. You've just created Hot Fuss and become one of the biggest rock bands in the world, along with having a single like Mr. Brightside which is quickly becoming an immortal song in the rock world. You already see the problem for the next album, right? How the hell are you supposed to top something like that?
Rather than just give us Hot Fuss 2: Electric Boogaloo, Brandon Flowers found the way forward when becoming a fan of Bruce Springsteen, finding a companion in the kind of heartland rock that he heard from the Boss. While Sam's Town still has a lot of the trademark mix of synths and guitars, you can tell that Brandon is trying to go for something a lot closer to the bone, going so far as to name the album after a hotel complex he would pass by in Vegas.
Working with Flood, this entire record feels like the long lost classic rock album no one got to hear, from the shimmery sounds of When You Were Young to the urgency you can hear in Brandon's voice on songs like For Reasons Unknown. This would prove to be a precursor of what's to come for the Killers as well, becoming more in tune with their songwriting and making heartland rock their calling card. While it's fun to be the pop band every now and again, it pays off to be yourself a lot more often.
