10 Most Underrated Rock Music Frontmen And Women

4. Kathleen Hanna - Bikini Kill

If you want to have a meaningful discussion of feminism in rock music, you have to talk about Bikini Kill.

Formed in 1990, these pioneers of the riot grrrl movement turned the music scene on its head with their blistering music and taboo-busting lyrics.

Leading very much from the front was Kathleen Hanna, the group's singer and a former spoken word performer. Hanna became interested in radical feminism at an early age, and that passion stayed with her when she started her musical career.

When it comes to punk music in any form, it's important to have big characters to draw people in. The Sex Pistols would have never gotten off the ground without Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten, and where would the Banshees be without their Siouxsie Sioux?

Hanna very much fulfilled this role for Bikini Kill, acting as their singer, spokeswoman, mascot, and about a billion other things all rolled into one.

A mesmerising stage presence who was every bit the counterculture icon she presented herself as, Kathleen Hanna is easily one of the most important women in rock history.

Also, she came up with the phrase "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for Nirvana. How cool is that?
