You know a Queens of the Stone Age track when you hear one. It conjures up images of a vintage Cadillac speeding through the desert at night.
In the 20 plus years since the release of their self-titled debut album, Queens of the Stone Age have gone through almost as many line up changes. But their sound has retained a consistence, all thanks to the musical stylings of frontman and lead guitarist Josh Homme.
The band's unique sound was born out of the tedious boredom that came with residing in the wasteland of Palm Desert, California. After a brief stint touring with grunge group Screaming Trees, Homme spent the late '90s in his desert hometown, developing his signature sound.
Homme is a bluesman at heart, and his style has been informed by the classic rock derived from the blues greats. But he was equally informed by the geography of his home. Surrounded by arid mountains, and deserts wastes, Palm Desert, offered little in the way of entertainment for Homme. His sound is a reflection of the time spent driving aimlessly through the desert, or getting royally baked and partaking in prolonged, sludgy jam sessions.
