10 Music Genres That Died

6. Glam Metal

The antithesis of the aforementioned grunge genre, glam metal was all about excess. Artists typically enjoyed copious amounts of make-up, flamboyant costuming and gigantic hair. In the wake of MTV’s runaway success, many bands grew more obsessed with their aesthetic appeal over their musical quality.

Inspired by 70s glam rock sensations such as KISS, glam metal upped the ante with a heavier, angrier sound. Bands such as Cinderella and Poison enjoyed considerable success with their hairspray enriched antics. Glam metal’s following continued to grow during the late 80s before the arrival of grunge ran it into obscurity. Very few of the glam metal favourites survived the 90s and those that did drastically altered their image and style (Pantera being a prime example of such a transformation).

Glam metal enjoyed a fun, albeit brief, resurgence in the mid-noughties thanks to the success of throwback groups like Steel Panther and The Darkness. While these groups enjoyed respectable rewards, it was not enough to relaunch the glam metal scene. The genre, as a whole, would soon fade back into obscurity, seemingly for good this time.
