10 Music Side Projects Better Than The Main Band
1. Gorillaz
By the time the '00s rolled around, Damon Albarn was already a huge star in the Britpop realm. Although there were fans who insisted on the feud between Blur and Oasis, you can tell that Albarn was getting a bit disenchanted with being the main star in a mainstream rock band. So where did he go from there? Beyond rock music altogether.
As the result of brainstorming with his roommate Jamie Hewlett, Damon started to write songs for the project Gorillaz, which was meant to be far more zany than what he was used to.
Considering that this "band" was going to an entirely fictional cartoon, Albarn had the chance to go wherever he wanted stylistically, which led to some amazing collaborations with everyone from Del the Funky Homosapian to MF Doom later down the line on Demon Days.
These days, Gorillaz feels more like a full project now more than ever, with the Song Machine series of tracks being some of the most forward looking music that Damon has worked on since the early '00s.
While there are probably a ton of fans holding out for the Blur train to operate at full capacity again, it seems that Damon is just fine in his cartoon paradise.
