10 Musical Left Turns NOBODY Saw Coming

7. Neighborhoods - Blink-182

After almost a decade of laying dormant, Blink-182 announced their reunion at the end of the 2000's. Many fans were clamouring to hear what a new mature Blink would sound like, but when Neighborhoods arrived in 2011, it kicked up a stink amongst the Blink faithful.

The sound of Neighborhoods ended up sounding like what guitarist Tom Delonge had been playing in his band Angels and Airwaves.

The space-influenced sound is definitely jarring, but certainly doesn't make the record bad. This mature approach sounds like the logical next step that the band would have taken after their 2003 untitled release. The exclusion of joke songs helped give the group the opportunity to explore different songwriting topics.

The opener "Ghost on the Dance Floor" deals with the loss of a close friend while songs like "After Midnight" and "Even if She Falls" display that odd romanticism that Blink were hinting at before the first breakup.

However, this situation could not last forever.

After a few years touring this record and a few EPs, Delonge was kicked out of the band and replaced with Matt Skiba. Given the circumstances, this album serves as a reminder of what could have been had Delonge stuck around
