There are various conspiracy theories surrounding alternative rock band 311's name. Some people even believe that it is a reference to the Ku Klux Klan, as the letter K is the eleventh in the alphabet, and when repeated three times it spells KKK. While this conclusion simply demonstrates what happens when certain people having too much time on their hands, it did not stop several high schools from banning pupils from wearing 311 t-shirts back in the day.

While the real story behind their name is not exactly wholesome, it is thankfully not related to the white supremacy movement. In reality, the name 311 was chosen because it is the Omaha police code for indecent exposure. The event which inspired this decision is not entirely clear, but it seems that bassist Aaron "P-Nut" Wills thought of the moniker when the band's original guitarist was arrested for streaking, or when another friend of his was taken into custody for skinny-dipping in a public pool. Either way, the culprits were issued the citation 311, and the rest became history.
