10 Musicians That Got Fired From Huge Bands
7. Tony McCarroll - Oasis
No member of Oasis was meant to be the greatest musician in the world by any stretch. While Noel Gallagher likes to talk about how he might be a god amongst musicians some of the time, he also admits that he doesn't know much on guitar, but knows enough to make some of the greatest songs in the world. A song is only as good as the performance though, and Tony McCarroll's days were numbered before Definitely Maybe even came out.
During the first few recording sessions for the album, Tony would be constantly out of step with the rest of the band, never quite playing in time and getting chewed out by the lads both on tour and during rehearsals. While songs like Bring It On Down sound monumental on the record, it's only out of pure frustration, with Tony getting to that point after being riled up by the rest of the band and becoming so furious that he found that sort of energy. When Noel was ready to take the leap on the next album though, he knew that tracks like Champagne Supernova and Don't Look Back In Anger would never have worked at the rate they were going.
Going into the studio for Some Might Say, the first single off of Morning Glory would be the last with Tony, ditching him for Alan White, who had much more precision behind the drumkit that suited songs like Wonderwall a lot better. It must have been awful for Tony being treated like dirt most of the time, but his style of drumming gives Definitely Maybe a punk rock vibe that they never really captured again.
