10 Musicians That Saved Their Careers By Changing Genres

7. My Chemical Romance

It would surprise absolutely no one to think of My Chemical Romance as one of the more campy bands of the '00s on first glance. Along with their first album I Brought You My Bullets, most of MCR's early catalog had more to do with the emo mindset than fleshing out the actual music. While it might have sounded sophomoric then, no one could have predicted the amount of raw talent on display here.

Starting with Three Cheers, MCR started to morph into something a lot more accessible for your average rock fan, dabbling into melodic material that was indebted as much to the Beatles as it was to the Cure and even the Germs. Once the Black Parade came out though, the entire band went nuclear, with every single instrument brought to its loudest conclusion. Chronicling a rock opera of sorts, the added sense of dramatic heft brought into something like Welcome to the Black Parade and I Don't Love You is like night and day compared to their earlier stuff.

Regardless of the amount of eyeliner donned on at any one time, no one can argue with the amount of solid hooks that MCR had until their inevitable breakup at the start of the 2010's. Seeing how they're coming back on the road again in the near future, here's hoping that that same creative ingenuity hasn't weathered after all these years.
