10 Musicians That Walked Away From HUGE Bands

9. Peter Gabriel - Genesis

The entire rock and roll lifestyle is not really something that's suited for a regular 9-5 job. This is the kind of job that is virtually impossible to call in sick to, and you better make sure that you're committed to every single show that you play if you want to reap the benefits later. So when you start to bring your family into the mix, it can get a little bit complicated.

Around the time that Genesis were riding high with Peter Gabriel at the front, the singer was also struggling with managing his home life, where he was expecting his first child. Although the band had reached an agreement of the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway being the last Gabriel record for a little while, the ensuing tour seemed to be a bit too much for Gabriel to take, not wanting to be too far away from his child if something came up.

Being more of a scenario of choosing between the band and his family, Gabriel went back home and left the stage outfits behind, with Phil Collins stepping up behind the mic and ushering in the next phase of Genesis's career. Once Gabriel was ready to return to the fold, it didn't take him long to get back on top, dominating the '80s with songs like In Your Eyes around the same time that his old friends were putting out Invisible Touch. Prog may have been a tricky genre in the '70s, but it can make for some damn interesting pop music later down the line.
