10 Musicians Who Decided To Quit Huge Bands

9. Peter Gabriel - Genesis

As the ‘60s gave way to new sonic experiments, Genesis were one of the few bands who could be considered musical geniuses. Rather than aim for the 2-3 minute pop song, every one of the band’s releases told engaging stories with 20 minute epics, which would go on to define the subgenre of prog rock. Their legacy may have been secure, but the band’s eccentric frontman found himself unable to keep up with the rigorous touring life.

Ever since the band’s inception, Peter Gabriel was known as the key member of the band, known for his strange and disturbing outfits and crazed behavior when he hit the stage. However, Gabriel’s life began turning a corner once the band finished recording their double album the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Juggling time with his family and the band, Gabriel felt stifled as he tried to be around to witness the birth of his child while keeping up his recording schedule.

Growing more and more frustrated, Gabriel finally broke during the tour for Lamb, where he announced that he would be leaving. Shortly after the tour wrapped up, Gabriel was out, leaving Phil Collins to step up from behind the drum kit as the band’s new singer. Gabriel to this day doesn’t hold any animosity towards his bandmates, but sometimes things just don’t work out the way they’re supposed to.
