10 Musicians Who Died In 2020

6. Genesis P-Orridge

A singer-songwriter, poet, performance artist, acerbic pundit, and all round irreplaceable character, Hull legend Genesis P-Orridge was a true one of a kind. A rabble rouser from the off, they played a major part in late ‘6os revolutionary student politics before starting up COUM Transmissions.

The group was a haven for like minded avant garde artists and performers and quickly drew the ire of local Tory politicians. They became notorious around East Yorkshire through provocative gigs and performances before decamping for London.

There P-Orridge formed Throbbing Gristle, their superb four piece that many cite as the original industrial band. Throbbing Gristle’s music was combative, deep and fascinating, with 1979’s “20 Jazz Funk Golden Greats” a particular highlight.

P-Orridge continued to perform regularly and push boundaries throughout their life, releasing collections of writing and embarking on wild projects including body alterations and other provocative pieces. P-Orridge died of Leukaemia at 70.
