10 Musicians Who Turned Down Iconic Songs

1. I Don't Want to Miss a Thing - Aerosmith

For as long as Aerosmith have been rocking and rolling through the music scene, they spent most of their glory years with no real #1 hits to show for it. Though songs from Dream On to Dude Looks Like a Lady had a fair amount of airplay both on MTV and the radio, it never translated to having that one massive crossover song. The '90s were a bit of a different story though, and songwriter Diane Warren came through with the golden ticket that would give Aerosmith their first ever chart topper.

When you look at the basic structure of I Don't Want To Miss a Thing though, none of it really checks out as an Aerosmith tune, being much more based in singer songwriter territory rather than the down and dirty blues that the band had been known for. That's because when the demo was being shopped around the industry, the thought was getting someone like Celine Dion to sing the song, being a musical sequel to the kind of vocal work she did on My Heart Will Go On.

That film was based on a real event though, and when you have a movie tie in that's about a bunch of oil drillers going up into space to blow up an asteroid, having a rock and roll edge is exactly the kind of thing you would want blaring out of your speakers. Celine already has her space secure in the history of pop music, but the kind of heartache that comes out of Steven Tyler's screams is the kind of emotion that the more hardened rock and roll fans can get down with.
