10 Musicians You Love For The Wrong Album

6. Blossoms

What You SHOULD Love Them For: Their early psychedelic work.

Bit of a strange one this, because technically speaking we’re not really talking about an album, but Blossoms felt so much more urgent and necessary back when they were putting out psych-tinged slices of post-britpop goodness. With their brooding grooves and fuzzed-up guitars, they were a welcome antidote to the avalanche of indie-lite groups masquerading as rock bands, and it felt like the world was their oyster.

And to be fair to the lads from Stockport, they’ve done pretty well for themselves. Staples of the Radio X scene and globetrotting festival mainstays, the five-piece have carved out the kind of career that most bands can only dream of these days.

But somewhere along the way they ditched the psych and picked up some synth. Oodles and oodles of synth. Gone were the deliciously noir leanings of their unsigned days and in came songs that were unashamedly pop-ish in their sensibilities, drenched in electronics and hopped up on sugar-sweet hooks, like ABBA in skinny jeans.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a bit of synth, or with pop music writ large, but when everything in popular culture feels like an ode to Stranger Things, you’ve got to ask yourself whether we need another band who sound like they hail straight from Hawkins, Indiana.

Blossoms still have some bangers, granted, but their early work remains their best.
