6. More Songs About Buildings And Food - Talking Heads (1978)
During Talking Heads' early days they shared a fairly similar sound with their contemporaries, Television. With their second record, however, they began moving in a new direction. While touring with the Ramones in London, the group met Brian Eno. The encounter would signal that start of a creatively rich period for the band.
Eno introduced the group to the sounds of Afrobeat and West African polyrhythms. Their next few years would be heavily informed by the likes of Fela Kuti. The culmination of this period would be the group's magnum opus Remain In Light.
But their second album was were it all began. Eno recognised that the group had a unique and erratic approach to rhythm, and he helped them develop it. The textured layering of this album is far beyond their first. For all the artsy references hidden with in Byrne's lyrics, this is a dance rock album. It doesn't have the same number of out and out bangers as Remain In The Light, and it isn't as experimental as Fear Of Music, but it's an important step in the evolution of the Heads' sound.
