3. English Tapas - Sleaford Mods (2017)
The sound of Sleaford Mods is one of the bleak and harsh reality of austerity Britain. Social and political divides are explored through Jason Williamsons lyrics, which are as harsh as they are humorous. After over a decade of utilising a fairly stark sonic palate, you'd think this sound might have become tired. But due to the political and social turmoil of the last few years, they've had a constant source of inspiration.
Their most recent record, Spare Rips, had the fall out of the Corona virus to draw from. Their 2017 record, English Tapas, had the fall out of Brexit; summed up perfectly with the line "We are the dumb Brits. Lobbin' down one-pint cans of imported s**t".
There's nothing particularly innovative about their sound musically: simple bass lines, incessantly rumble along with the odd sample to add a degree of texture. But it represents the monotony of what Williamson is singing/rapping about; the ridiculousness of a technology obsessed society who's as quick to anger as they are to forget about the last political scandal. It's just one thing after another.
These guys wouldn't say they're innately political, rather they document the state of Britain as they see it. It just so happens that everything seems to be interpreted through a political lens these days - a point not unrealised by the Mods.
