10 Obscure Grunge Albums You Need To Listen To

1. Love Battery - Dayglo

Embracing the more psychedelic side of grunge, Love Battery could boast some of the finest melodies the scene had to offer over their 5 albums of the 1990s. It doesn’t get better than Dayglo, their second album, which sees the band brimming with ideas that range from straightforward rock to something approaching shoegaze.

On the latter side of the fence is the terrific “Foot”, which has a motorik beat and otherworldly guitars that are occasionally overtaken by a wall of sheer noise. “Damaged” takes a similar approach, with bizarre lead lines that sound pulled around and manipulated.

Opener “Out Of Focus”, meanwhile, is an exercise in distortion, with the vocals deliberately shoved back in the mix with the power of the instrumental work. Things get heavier still on the blissed out “See Your Mind”, a pure pop melody that gets stomped over by the endless guitars and howling backing vocals.

It’s an album that defies categorisation, taking pieces of grunge, pieces of the Seattle scene’s earlier influences, and plenty more from elsewhere, and turning out a truly inspired album.
