10 Obscure Grunge Albums You Need To Listen To
5. Mudhoney - Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge
Perhaps grunge’s biggest act that doesn’t occupy the very top tier of genre fame, Mudhoney are best remembered for their debut EP Superfuzz Bigmuff, which essentially codified the subculture and, in its title, the effects pedals that would become synonymous with it.
While that release was as punchy and immediate as debuts get, their sophomore full-length, Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, is equally good if less storied. There are tracks which continue their Stooges-inspired aural assault, like “Shoot The Moon”, which has the same ferocity with a little more polish to their earlier work.
On “Who You Drivin’ Now?” they sound somewhere between Seattle grunge and a ‘60s garage act, as well as one of the tightest bands on the scene. Best of all is “Good Enough”, one of the great singles of the grunge era. It’s immensely catchy, and combines well crafted melodies with Mudhoney’s irreverent slacker delivery.
Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge wasn’t a game changer in the style of their first EP, but as an example of a band developing within a scene, it’s a smash.
