10 Perfect 90s Albums That Changed Rock And Roll Music

7. What's the Story Morning Glory - Oasis

If you look at the basic greatest hits that came out of the '90s rock scene, we all seemed to be on a collective downer. Most of the grunge bands tended to talk about some fairly morbid subject matter, and even some of the cheery songs tended to be either ironic or dwelled on something that was a lot more serious than just regular rock and roll. It wasn't all bad though, and we got a lot of hope from a bunch of lads from Manchester with stars in their eyes.

While Definitely Maybe may have been Oasis' breakthrough into the mainstream, What's the Story Morning Glory was the first time it felt like we were dealing with a new version of the Beatles, as Noel Gallagher penned songs that sounded like the golden age of rock and roll had come back. Although tracks like Wonderwall may have been beaten down to the ground by the meme gods in recent years, everything else still holds up as some of the biggest anthems of the time, from the hope for the future that comes in Some Might Say to making Stairway to Heaven via glam rock on Champagne Supernova.

It might be hard to decipher what Noel is getting at some of the time, but what he's saying almost doesn't matter in the long run. Bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam may have been talking about the real problems that we were facing, but Oasis gave us the confidence to carry on throughout the rest of the decade.
