10 Perfect '90s Rock Songs That Everyone Forgets About
1. Rain When I Die - Alice in Chains
If there was one thing that seemed to coat the Seattle grunge scene, it always led back to heroin. While not every single band was giving into the needle whenever they could, seeing people like Kurt Cobain lose himself to his vices just got more and more upsetting as his star continued to rise. Alice in Chains ended up knowing their vices a little too well, and hearing them trying to pull themselves together on Dirt may for one of the most upsetting prophecies in modern rock.
Throughout every other song on the project, Layne Staley seems to equate his problems with substance abuse to an abusive relationship, saying that this proverbial "she" has too big a grasp on him to be totally free. Them Bones might have set us up for the journey, but something about Rain When I Die is almost too tortured to even put into words, as Layne describes the feeling of not wanting to succumb to his vices but still finding an excuse to go back for one more hit every single time.
Though Layne's screams on the chorus are some of the best of his entire career, you can't help but think that it's coming from a place of pure pain in his heart, as he tries to lay into himself for not having the discipline to actually come clean. It stung all the more after Layne's death as well, as he talks about the sadness that will come when he's laid to rest by the same demons that he struggled with his entire life. All we're left with is a broken man, praying for rain that's never going to come.
