10 Perfect Albums That Defined The 1970s
6. Marvin Gaye: Let's Get It On (1973)
During the '60s, funk, soul and R&B artists had been influential on mainstream white musicians. By the '70s, black musician started to gain the recognition they deserved.
One of the rising stars, and perhaps the smoothest voice in music, was Marvin Gaye. His 1971 album, What's Going On, brought him his first big hitter during the new decade. The themes dealt with the economic issues of impoverished communities. Gaye mourned and railed against police brutality, and the poor treatment of Vietnam vets - of whom, Gaye's brother was one.
Let's Get It On, was a drastic change in tone. It was the album that saw Marvin Gaye become the voice of musical sensuality. His lyrics were personal expressions of intimacy. Every other track contained references to love making.
The opening number, became the soundtrack for every candle lit night of impassioned romance, to follow. And, You Sure Love To Ball, caused a stir, opening with the sounds of a man and women moaning with pleasure. Yep, this was one sexy album.
When all the political and social turmoil of the decade became too much, this was the record to stick on, when you wanted to indulge in that most tantalising of distractions, sex.
