10 Perfect Albums That Will Make You Love Grunge Music
1. Nevermind - Nirvana
Before Nevermind was even an idea for a record, Kurt Cobain was not looking to be in the greatest band in the world. Though he may have wanted to become successful in the long run, there was no idea of being on the same level as bands like the Rolling Stones or anything like that. These guys just wanted to play the music they wanted to play, but if you're at the right place at the right time, the rest of the world will go along for the ride with you.
While sessions for Nevermind weren't really working out with original drummer Chad Channing, the addition of Dave Grohl behind the drums was what sent the record into the stratosphere, creating rhythm hooks like the opening drum fill of Smells Like Teen Spirit. As much as these songs were able to hook you in from the beginning, the mentality was to keep the tracks as simple as possible, almost like writing children's songs that were disguised as rock and roll songs.
With the music world quickly shifting beneath their feet though, Nevermind became the template for what MTV saw as the next wave of rock and roll, as hair metal was kicked to the curb overnight and the album eventually kicking Michael Jackson off the top of the charts within a few weeks of its release. The blockbuster success of this album may have made Kurt feel a little bit uncomfortable, but this wasn't just about holding onto your underground credibility. This was a sign that the revolution had come to town, and the rest of the rock world was about to get in on what Seattle had to offer.
