10 Perfect Follow Ups To Masterpiece Albums

4. What's The Story Morning Glory - Oasis

There are only a handful of debut albums in the world of rock that can hold a candle to Definitely Maybe. While the Gallagher Brothers liked to talk about how much they wanted to big rock stars all the time, their first album really banked on that promise, making something that was a mix of punk attitude, classic rock pastiches, and some of the best kind of arrogance that can come out of raw rock and roll. It may have been a nightmare to make, but Noel spent the rest of the next album honing his songwriting skills for the next time around.

Going into work on What’s the Story Morning Glory, these songs ended up going in a much more classic rock style direction, being unashamed of wearing their influences on their sleeves, like the John Lennon homage at the beginning of Don’t Look Back In Anger or stealing the melody from While My Guitar Gently Weeps for a section of She’s Electric. This isn’t about just stealing from classic rock tropes though, since Noel takes them in a completely different direction on every single song, like the more downtrodden lyrics on a song like Cast No Shadow or making one of their punkiest songs yet on the sorta title track Morning Glory.

While Definitely Maybe may have been the sound of the band discovering what they could do, this is them staking their claim to be in the same conversations as their heroes, working the same crowds that went wild for the Rolling Stones back in the day. It might not be the most original thing in the world, but when you hear something like Champagne Supernova, you’re hearing a band having their cake and eating it too.
