10 Perfect Grunge Albums With No Bad Songs
5. Live Through This - Hole (1994)
Courtney Love is often remembered as one half of the chaotic power couple, Kurt & Courtney. And, since the mid '90s most of her media attention has revolved around her long-riding feud with Dave Grohl... But if you can ignore all the swirling controversies that cling to Courtney Love - long enough to listen to this album - you might change your opinion of her.
Hole's debut album was a riot of noise, displaying passion and spark, if not a huge degree of skill. Their second album was a million miles from their original, however. A line-up reshuffle helped tightened the rhythm section, allowing Love to explore more melodic song structures. The impassioned bite of the band's bratty angst, was still present, but now they sounded like accomplished and capable song writers.
The record utilised the soft-verse/hard-chorus approach that was typical of the genre. It moved along with a post-punk energy that slowly built with every song. A notably more gentle song come in the form of, Softer, Softest. Leaning on an acoustic guitar melody, the song reached an impassioned crescendo, which featured backing vocals from Kurt Cobain. Sadly Cobain died days before the album was released.
