10 Perfect Grunge Albums With No Bad Songs
2. Tell Me How You Really Feel - Courtney Barnett (2018)
Now, we do like to surprise our readers every now and then. Although you might be cursing that we haven't included an album from Alice In Chains or Mud Honey, it's important to recognise acts that are still carrying the torch of grunge today - albeit in slightly unexpected ways.
Courtney Barnett brings a deadpan humour to her music. Stylistically, she resides in the world of indie-folk rock, delivering laid back songs, that drive along with unwaveringly casual guitar hooks. Barnett's second solo album saw her tune into a murkier sound, however. It was a departure from the more rambling compositions on her debut. Fusing many sensibilities of grunge with a more contemporary form of alt rock, resulted in a laid back but striking body of work. She utilises a sludgy guitar tone to create an, at times, ominous and brooding atmosphere.
Nameless, Faceless is a number that harkens back to Kurt Cobain's approach to handling difficult matters. Musically it follows the carefree nature that Barrnett is known for, but the lyrics express the anxieties of walking alone late at night as a women. It's not a preachy song, it just depicts the harsh reality faced by women, in a strikingly blunt and effective fashion.
