10 Perfect Hard Rock Albums That Are Insanely Dark

3. Master of Reality - Black Sabbath

Some of the heaviest genres out there today tend to come back to stoner rock. Even if the lyrics aren't that important if you look at them closely, there's always that tone of the guitars that makes you feel like you're trudging through mud every time you listen to it. In this arena, something like Sleep or Monster Magnet might get the job done, but they still can't hold a candle to Master of Reality.

After two albums of making some of the most brutal hard rock ever created, Black Sabbath cemented their legacy as one of the finest metal bands with this record, with Tony Iommi tuning his guitar down low to his signature muddy tone. Tuning the guitar lower doesn't automatically make the record dark though, so the rest of the band holds up their end of the bargain with some of the most brutal lyrics of the time.

Although some of the songs are slightly more dopey than others like Sweet Leaf, Children of the Grave is practically the sound of the hippy generation breathing its final breath, alongside the massive closing track Into the Void. Once this album was unleashed upon the world, Sabbath had become more than just your average rock band. These were the kind of rockers that seemed to crawl right out of the crypt.
