10 Perfect Hard Rock Power Trios
2. Muse
For all intents and purposes, the power trio isn't something you saw terribly often by the start of the '00s. You either had the nu metal crowd that was looking to add more and more extensions onto their sound, or you had the garage rock bands who decided to throw caution to the wind and get things done with just two people. Somewhere in the middle though, you had Muse, who took rock back into the arena.
Despite their obvious comparisons to Radiohead back in the day, Muse quickly developed into their own animal by the time they reached Origin of Symmetry, being equal parts art rock, experimental rock, and arena rock at the exact same time. For all of the praise that Matt Bellamy gets as the main songwriter, Chris Wolstenholme's bass is one of the beefiest tones in rock music, especially on songs like Hysteria and Panic Station.
As for drummers though, Dominic Howard may be one of the most eclectic musicians in the field today, knowing exactly where to put the bombastic sound of his toms while also knowing when to substitute the electronic soundscapes as well. Instead of the usual alt rock tendencies that you find in bands today, Muse are that rare powerhouse that feel like they could take on someone like Queen and hold their own.
