10 Perfect Indie Albums Of The 1990s

6. Different Class - Pulp

At the height of the Britpop movement, music was undergoing a pretty significant change. After a few years of stomping the old generation in the dirt, the sounds of bands like Blur were far more kinder to the golden age of rock music back in the '60s. The nostalgia goggles were definitely on, and Pulp were about to take us through the warped alternative take on glam rock.

Then again, is there any real way to describe all of the strangeness going on in Different Class? Outside of the unstoppable hits like Common People, there are a lot more snide moments on the track listing as well, especially on songs like Pencil Skirt, which sounds like it could have been written by David Bowie if he were born about 20 years too late. There's also a tremendous amount of heart to this album, with Jarvis Cocker wearing his emotions on his sleeve to an extent that would make Robert Smith jealous like on Something Changed.

There are a lot of different faces to this album, but that's kind of the point. Indie was never about catering to the fans. It was about following your muse, and this album covers every base that you could have asked for from a modern Britpop act. They aimed to sing about common people, and you'd be hardpressed to find any common person who can't relate to at least one of these lines.
