10 Perfect Metal Albums Everyone Tried To Copy
9. White Pony - Deftones
There are normally two camps in the metal world when it comes to nu metal: either it was an all time classic genre or anything that came out of it was absolute trash. If you look at the entire scene though, it's actually somewhere in the middle, as some bands had some classics in the genre, only to run away from their sound as fast as possible once it started to go way out of style. Deftones were always proud of their metal roots though, and White Pony may have been the closest they have come to pure darkness.
Before the record was even completed though, the guys were going through their fair share of excess, getting worked up on drugs during the recording and making some of the most vicious songs they've ever made on songs like Elite. In between the more hard edged nu metal sounds though, there's also a fair amount of atmospheric sounds as well, like the borderline shoegaze elements that happen on a song like Digital Bath.
With Frank Delgado now an official member behind the turntables, these songs seem to have a world of their own, which has led many bands to try their hand at their own ethereal metal style, pairing the double bass kicks with the lush sounds of keyboards and shimmering vocals. It may have been a bit strange at the time, but White Pony made its first steps so bands like Rolo Tomassi could run today.
