10 Perfect Metal Albums With ZERO Flaws
2. Iowa - Slipknot
The biggest crime that many nu metal bands would commit was the lack of follow through. Though many bands were able to lure listeners in with their visceral music, you would see just how shallow they were once you put on a full record of theirs. On the other side of the spectrum was Slipknot, whose sophomore effort nearly put your mind through a meat grinder.
Named after the state in which the members grew up in, Iowa manages to take every ounce of pain these guys have ever felt and channel it into their instruments. While it might be hard for some metalheads to get used to the intensity of something like "The Heretic Anthem," it pays off in spades once you decide to take the plunge. Aside from the actual music, Corey Taylor's lyrics are some of the most disturbing diatribes ever commited to tape, as he talks about abandonment, hatred, and aggression, and throws it right back at you in a sonic ball of spite.
Despite every single disturbing thing about this album, it managed to top the album charts in many countries, which seems unprecedented in retrospect. Iowa is definitely not the most pleasant listening experience in the world, but the music on here helps trigger that more animalistic side of your brain. Drop all your inhibitions at the door and get a glimpse of metal can really do.
