10 Perfect Pop Albums Of The 1980s

6. Remain in Light - Talking Heads

For all of the pop starlets that would eventually grace MTV, you've got to remember that the beginnings were really shaky. The foundation of the network was originally really unprofessional, with most of the videos being art house films created by the more eclectic rock bands out at the time. Long before you had the blockbuster '80s kicking into high gear, Talking Heads tried to expand our minds with Remain in Light.

Arriving right at the start of the decade, this was the moment where David Byrne's twisted view of the world started to take shape in musical form, working with different world musicians to create some of the most infectious grooves of their career. Even though there are traces of funk and even dance music in the mix this time, none of the songs really lose that Talking Heads brand of nervous energy, as Byrne gets more and more zany with his vocal mannerisms on every track.

Though most of the record exists as a coherent whole, Once in a Lifetime could be argued as the definitive song that started the '80s properly, with an off the wall video of David against a green screen and lyrics about becoming disassociated from society. In the wake of this one video, more adventurous acts started bubbling up to the surface looking to challenge the listener however they could, either through the visuals they used or the wild nature of their live shows. No matter what kind of music would come after, the rules of the game had started to change once this album came out.
