4. MTV Unplugged in New York - Nirvana
There are probably not going to be too many more musicians who will have such a singular impact on music as Kurt Cobain. Though he may not have wanted the kind of fame and attention that Smells Like Teen Spirit gave him, the last few years of his life reads like a man who just achieved all of his dreams and then realized that he didn't want it. While Kurt didn't decide to stick around after his suicide in 1994, Nirvana's final Unplugged performance gave us a glimpse at the man behind everything.
Considering how loud and chaotic they could be on any other platform, this is where you get to see Nirvana in the raw, with nothing but a 90 minute shot in New York as they go through some of their greatest songs. Note the use of songs and not hits here, because there aren't too many radio singles in the lineup, with most of them being covers or some of Kurt's personal favorites like Dumb and Pennyroyal Tea.
From the look and the sound of the evening, this really does feel like the kind of gig that Kurt wanted to make, which would get all the more spooky when you see the kind of floral arrangements at his feet. If you didn't know any better, the whole feel of the evening seems like we're watching the voice of a generation leave his body and become a musical angel for a little while.
