10 Perfect Rap Songs For Rock Music Fans
9. My Ex's Best Friend - Machine Gun Kelly
Over the past few years, it feels like the pop punk transformation of Machine Gun Kelly has brought out more discourse among rockers than actual fans. No matter what this guy might want to do with this new sound, it's always going to be a question of what true pop punk is supposed to be and whether or not he really means what he is singing. When you put down the discussion side of things, My Ex's Best Friend is still the most successful pop punk song we've gotten in a while.
Since the more contemporary pop punk acts like 5 Seconds of Summer have gone full on pop, MGK actually seems to have some genuine love for the genre that he's cribbing from, almost sounding like a gruffer Tom DeLonge on most of this track. Compared to the kind of thing you got out of Lil Wayne on Rebirth, you can tell that MGK at least is putting some care into learning his stuff, even if he does come up short more than a few times.
You do have to give some credit to Travis Barker though, helping build this entire song from the ground up and still managing to be one of the few drummers in pop punk that has only gotten better with time. Say what you want to about how Machine Gun Kelly is the pariah of pop punk, but none of that can take away from how good this actually sounds.
