10 Perfect Rock Albums For Production

7. Continuum - John Mayer

And this is probably where most people like to tune out or wonder what the hell John Mayer is doing on a list of great rock albums. It’s not like the holes aren’t clear as day in his delivery either, with his first few records being either too saccharine to take seriously or too douchey to really want to take seriously at all. John did have a vision though, and Continuum may be the greatest sounding rock record released in the ‘00s.

And that’s not even on the part of John all that much. Looking to make the perfect pop album that he always wanted to make, John is only as good as the people he’s working with, and having people like Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino in your wheelhouse makes for absolute magic on this record, always finding the right space to play a fill and also knowing when to support John when he takes center stage.

That’s not to put down John as a guitar player either, having just as many chops as the rest of the players behind him and turning in some phenomenal solos across this record like on Gravity and his cover of Hendrix’s Bold As Love. Before you even get to the solos, the tone on the guitar is near perfect on every track, whether that means the soft bends in Slow Dancing in a Burning Room or the fingerstyle stuff that happens in Stop This Train. As much as this might be a generic singer songwriter album on the surface, you never forget the humanity going on. These songs were made with human hands, and you can feel the heart beating through every song as well.
