10 Perfect Rock Albums For Summer 2022

5. Tame Impala: Innerspeaker (2010)

What would a summer rock playlist be without a little beaming psychedelia? Nothing screams sunshine and good times like an acid-infused Australian rock album. Kevin Parker's music project, Tame Impala, was part of the wave of Australian acts responsible for the psychedelic rock revival of the 2010s. Along with the likes of Pond and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Tame Impala delivered a raw mix of garage rock and trippy-hippy ambience.

Later releases by Tame Impala have became fairly pop centric. Currents (2015) and The Slow Rush (2020) contain well grafted pop/dance tracks, syphoned through a kaleidoscope of psych-rock influences. That's not to put those albums down - they're still fairly enjoyable - but the raucous guitar leads and wailing solos of earlier albums, have made way for wobbly synth melodies.

If you have a penchant for heavy guitars, then the smart move is to go back to the beginning of their catalogue. You've got the fuzz-box-extravaganza of "Desire Be Desire Go", which is as heavy as anything Frank Zappa did, and as trippy as Sgt. Pepper's. "Lucidity" contains a guitar line that sounds like its being played under water. Then there's the lysergic waterfall of "Solitude Is Bliss". Enjoy.
