10 Perfect Rock Albums From The LA Alternative Scene

9. Tool: Undertow (1993)

There's a mystical aura around Tool. Since their formation in 1990, they've only released five studio albums. Each has been equal parts, anticipated, acclaimed, and controversial. Frontman, Maynard James Keenan's willingness to explore difficult subjects - coupled with his cryptic answers in interviews - has only added to the mystery of the group.

Their studio debut was hotly anticipated after they released their explosive EP, Opiate. Opiate not only showcased the group's technical ability, but also their early willingness to tackle controversy - taking aim, specifically, at the censoring of musicians. The group generated further buzz following a tour with Rage Against the Machine.

Their debut was applauded by critics, but quickly sparked concern from the Parents Music Resource Centre (an organisation dedicated to stifling musical expression). The original artwork included nudity, deemed too lewd for public consumption. Keenan's lyrics, similarly, drew concern, for their graphic nature. But despite this, the group continued to draw fans.

Tool represented the darker, more intelligent and visceral side of the LA scene. Thematically they had more in common with the Seattle grunge acts, indulging in expressions of alienation and depression. But, sonically they came from a place unlike anyone else.
